Business Model:
Most business software, including ERP and supply chain management software,
make you go through several different subsystems to get an order through
the pipeline: Purchase Orders, EDI, Customer Orders, maybe DRP, certainly
MPS, MRP, CRP, Planned Orders for components, Purchase Orders again, EDI
again, Customer Orders again, etc. etc. Each subsystem has different user
interfaces, rules, and data models. And they are often connected with the
software equivalent of chewing gum.
In contrast to the above, SCAN™ has one simple model for all business processes, called REA for Resources, Events and Agents. The following is an operational explanation of REA.
Resources are processed or exchanged for other resources. Events include Processes and Exchanges. Economic Agents do the processing or exchanging.
A purchase order or customer order is an exchange, usually of products for
cash. A work order is a process, with input resources and output
resources.
Economic Agents are the software representatives of people working for
companies.
That's it. It's the simplest business software model in the known universe.
